SSI React Right Course in Andaman - CPR & First Aid for Everyone

React Right is SSI's emergency first-response course — and you don't need to be a diver to take this course. I have been teaching this course to enthusiasts, who simply want to learn how to respond if someone around them stops breathing or gets hurt. This course is essential for them who are on the way to becoming a rescue diver or a dive professional.

It covers CPR, first aid, oxygen administration, and AED use, built specifically around the kind of emergencies that happen in and around the water — not a generic land-only first-aid class. No tank, no fins, no prior diving experience required for you to start this.

What You'll Learn

First responder giving roadside CPR and first aid

The course runs on three simple ideas — Recognise, Respond, Restrict. Primary Care covers the eight core skills you need in the first critical minutes of an emergency: scene assessment, barrier use, CPR, rescue breathing, serious bleeding control, shock response, choking response, and spinal-injury protocol — including how the airway opening technique changes if you suspect a spinal injury, since that's one detail people don't expect going in.

From there it moves to Secondary Care: splinting, bandaging, and assessing injuries that aren't immediately life-threatening, plus disease transmission prevention and what the Good Samaritan law actually protects you for. On the diving side, you'll learn oxygen administration for pressure-related injuries like decompression sickness, and AED basics for cardiac arrest or drowning. It's all classroom-based — no in-water component.

Eligibility & Prerequisites

The honest intention to help others in an emergency is the eligibility for this course. This is the one course I teach that isn't restricted to certified divers — anyone can take it, diver or not. I regularly get non-divers signing up too, who want basic life-support skills for their own peace of mind.

No certification, no diving background, and no prior first-aid experience required. The participants must be 12 years and above (as per SSI standard) so that they can learn skills and understand the importance of this course in their daily life. You should be mentally and medically fit enough to take a correct decision in an emergency. It is worth checking our medical fitness form here.

How You Learn the React Right Speciality!

The steps of CPR — infographic

The course runs in two parts. First, you work through the SSI digital material independently, at your own pace, completing the knowledge review questions of each chapter. You'll find Primary Care, Secondary Care, oxygen administration, and AED, each broken into its own module. You can start this from home with our 1:1 guidance over the phone, whenever suits you, well before you land on Havelock.

The second part is two days with me in person, where the three ideas — Recognise, Respond, Restrict — actually become physical skill. I intentionally keep it to two days so slower learners, and divers aiming to become professionals, get the chance to practice the drills in depth.

We start with Primary Care: the eight core skills for the first critical minutes of an emergency — scene assessment, using barrier devices and gloves before you touch anyone, CPR, rescue breathing, and controlling serious bleeding. One detail people don't expect: if I suspect a spinal injury, I open the airway with a jaw-thrust instead of the usual head-tilt/chin-lift — that kind of judgment call is exactly what the course drills into you, not just the mechanics of compressions.

From there we move into Secondary Care — what to do once the patient is stable: shock management, splinting, bandaging, and assessing injuries that aren't immediately life-threatening. I cover how to prevent disease transmission, use personal protective equipment, and what the Good Samaritan law actually protects you for when you step in to help — genuinely useful to know, and rarely explained clearly anywhere else.

On the diving side specifically, you learn to recognize different oxygen tank valve and mask types and when each is used, since oxygen is the standard first response to most pressure-related diving injuries like decompression sickness. AED training closes it out — what's actually inside those wall-mounted emergency boxes, and how to use one on a cardiac arrest or drowning victim.

The last stretch is realistic scenario practice — I set up situations for you to work through as if they were real, which is usually where people relax and actually start enjoying it. The two days wrap with a written final exam, and your digital certification lands on your MySSI app the same day. If you're already a certified diver, the two bonus fun dives slot in here too. I prefer to take students out for those dives and arrange practical drills, so you walk away genuinely ready for an emergency, whether it happens on land or underwater.

Diver Stress & Rescue builds directly on top of React Right — you won't be able to enroll in that course without finishing this one first. If you already know you want to be the diver your buddies can count on in a real emergency, it's worth planning both together.

FAQs

No — React Right is open to non-divers, family members, and travel companions, alongside certified divers completing their Stress & Rescue prerequisite.

The core course runs entirely on land — CPR, first aid, oxygen, and AED training with no dives required. If you're already a certified diver, two bonus fun dives are included alongside the classroom skills.

You'll work through realistic emergency scenarios covering Primary Care (CPR, rescue breathing, serious bleeding, spinal injury response) and Secondary Care (shock management, splinting, bandaging), plus oxygen and AED use, before a written final exam.

Your SSI React Right certification is valid for two years from the date you're certified, after which a short React Right Update — not the full course — keeps it current.
