SSI Perfect Buoyancy Speciality Course in Andaman — Dive Weightless

What makes you enjoy any dive to the fullest is your control on buoyancy. Perfect Buoyancy is the one specialty where we work, polish, and fine-tune your buoyancy control to the next level. By the end of this course, you'll find yourself lasting longer on air, hovering over the reef without making much effort, focusing on the macro life around you, and no longer kicking up sand or bumping into your buddy.

It's one of the five preview dives inside Advanced Open Water, but this course prepares you to master it with real, repetitive practice until proper buoyancy becomes instinct — not something you have to think about.

What You'll Learn

The first thing you'll learn is proper weighting — carrying just enough lead to stay in control, instead of the extra kilos most divers add "just to be safe." Get this right, and everything else about buoyancy becomes easier.

From there, you'll learn to control your BC with much finer intent, keep your body horizontally trim in the water, and understand how your buoyancy shifts as your tank empties through a dive — skills that come together so you're never caught off guard, even at your safety stop.

I always find students lasting longer on air, since fighting the water makes you over-breathe, which empties a tank far quicker than gliding through it. You'll stop disturbing the reef too — no more fin contact with coral, no clouds of sand kicked up mid-dive. It's the specialty that changes how every dive feels after it.

Eligibility & Prerequisites

To join the Perfect Buoyancy Speciality, you need to be 10 years or older and hold a certified Open Water diving qualification (or its equivalent from another agency). Since this course builds directly on skills you already have as a certified diver, the focus is entirely on refining your buoyancy control. For full diving fitness and medical requirements, check our Category A/B guidelines and complete the medical questionnaire form before booking.

What to Expect on the Day

Perfect Buoyancy runs as a single-day course, so you'll be certified by evening. We start with paperwork and a short theory session covering proper weighting, how your BC is meant to work (with small, deliberate puffs of air instead of the over-inflate-then-deflate cycle most divers fall into without realising it), and the skills we'll be practicing in shallow water. I personally urge long, steady, and deep breathing practice, because shallow breathing spoils your buoyancy too — 15 minutes of breathing like you do in yoga.

The first dive is at Nemo Reef, where we work through a series of buoyancy skills — finding your correct weighting, hovering motionless at 5 metres with about 50 bar left in your tank, and practicing controlled inflation and deflation using the power inflator button, and using the oral inflation technique. We surface for a short break to go over what worked and what to adjust. Then descend to a depth of 5 metres, make ourselves neutrally buoyant, and continue the dive.

The second dive takes you to Red Pillar, where you'll put everything together on a real dive — holding trim, staying aware of how your buoyancy shifts as your tank empties, breathing deep, long, and steady, staying off the reef, and controlling your position without even thinking about it. By the end, buoyancy stops feeling like a task and starts feeling automatic.

FAQs

Poor buoyancy control is one of the biggest causes of reef damage from divers — fin contact, kicked-up sand, and accidental collisions with coral all come from struggling to hold position in the water. Fine-tuning your buoyancy means you glide past coral and sponges without ever brushing against them — better for the reef, and it makes every dive smoother too.

Not quite — Advanced Open Water only gives you a brief introduction to buoyancy as one of five specialty previews. This course goes much deeper, with focused, repetitive practice on weighting, trim, and breath control across two full dives.

Yes — most divers notice a real difference. Fighting the water with poor buoyancy makes you breathe harder and faster, which empties your tank quickly. Once you're hovering effortlessly instead of fighting to hold position, your air consumption drops noticeably.

No, all rental equipment is included in the course, including weights and a BCD. If you already own your own gear and prefer to dive with it, you're welcome to bring it along.

I recommend planning your visit between January and the end of April for this course. Calmer seas and better visibility make it much easier to focus on fine buoyancy control without current or poor visibility working against you.
