Becoming an SSI Divemaster in the Andaman Islands is more than completing another scuba certification. It is the transition from being a recreational diver to becoming a professional who can guide certified divers, assist instructors, manage dive activities, and take greater responsibility for safety and the overall dive experience. SSI describes Divemaster as a professional program that develops the knowledge and training required to guide certified divers and act as a certified assistant in recreational scuba programs.
Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) is particularly suited to this pathway because professional candidates can gain experience in different reef environments, boat diving, navigation, deeper dives, night diving and day-to-day dive center operations. Local professional programs in Havelock also emphasize learning through observation, assisting instructors and repeated practical experience — not simply collecting certifications.

Eligibility Requirements
According to the current SSI standard, a Divemaster candidate must be at least 18 years old and have 60 logged open-water dives totaling at least 40 hours. You also need Diver Stress & Rescue or an equivalent qualification. For Deep Diving, Navigation, and Night & Limited Visibility, SSI accepts the relevant specialty certifications/equivalents or documented experience of at least five dives in each area, provided the instructor can verify the required skills.

SSI's Science of Diving program covers subjects including physics, physiology, decompression theory, diving equipment and the aquatic environment and is required training for SSI professional programs.
Complete the Theory Training
The academic side is a major part of becoming a professional. You study how pressure affects divers, how gases behave underwater, decompression concepts, equipment, dive planning and the aquatic environment.
SSI's current Divemaster standard recommends approximately 35–45 hours for completion. The program includes academic, confined-water and open-water components, with the exact schedule determined by the instructor and local conditions.
From Theory to Practical Diving
This is where training in Andaman becomes especially valuable. Candidates learn by actually participating in dive operations — preparing equipment, observing briefings, assisting instructors, planning dives, practicing navigation and developing the ability to lead certified divers.
SSI requires direct supervision by an active-status SSI professional qualified to conduct the program for the academic, confined-water and open-water activities. The current standard also requires candidates to complete the prescribed evaluations and open-water training requirements.
Complete the Final Assessments
Before receiving the rating, candidates must pass the required Divemaster evaluations and final examinations, including the Science of Diving final exam and Scuba Professional final exam, and meet SSI's professional active-status requirements. Training records and required documentation are then uploaded to the MySSI App.
